OJ Simpson heads for prison gates

Famously, he was acquitted of murdering his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ron Goodman in 1995 in a legal case which made headlines around the world.

Simpson was granted parole July 20 after the disgraced football star expressed regret for his actions, which he said occurred after having a few drinks and misjudging the situation. The 70-year-old walked out of prison a little after midnight on October 1 -this way he could avoid media attention.

Citing safety concerns, Nevada prisons spokeswoman Brooke Keast says Simpson could be kept at a corrections facility for several weeks if necessary.

"While we respect the Nevada Parole Board's decision to release Simpson, it's still hard for us knowing he will be a free man again", the Goldmans said in a statement, according to ABC News. He now faces five years of parole supervision, although that time could be reduced with good behavior.

Photos from the corrections center showed Simpson signing out. Among them, she said, Simpson will not be allowed to consume any alcohol and will be tested regularly.

Julio Jones Injury Status: Injured Hip Against Bills
It wasn't pretty but the Buffalo Bills stood strong to knock off the Atlanta Falcons 23-17 on the road to improve to a 3-1 record. The Bills are 3-1 on the season and have retaken sole possession of the AFC East through four weeks of play.

Numerous national media outlets had reporters on the scene awaiting the release, but apparently Simpson was able to avoid the glare of publicity with his early morning release.

The Nevada Board of Parole Commissioners voted unanimously in July to release Simpson after he served nine years of a 33-year sentence for armed robbery and kidnapping. "Our state should not become a country club for this convicted criminal".

"He's going to Florida", Simpson's attorney Malcolm LaVergne said.

Florida had not received transfer paperwork from Nevada as of Friday, and Florida's attorney general said this week she doesn't want prison officials to let Simpson live in the state.

During the often emotional hearing, board members also heard testimony from Simpson's adult daughter, Arnelle, and from Bruce Fromong, one of two sports memorabilia dealers he was convicted of robbing at gunpoint on September 13, 2007.
