Trump spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Mr Trump was responding to a request from Puerto Rico governor Ricardo Rossello, and that the waiver would go into effect immediately.

Meanwhile, The Hill reports that people who the US government evacuates from Puerto Rico, Dominica and other countries in the region must sign promissory notes saying that they will repay the cost of their transportation. That means many Puerto Ricans here are looking to him after Hurricane Maria ravaged every part of the island of Puerto Rico last week.

We must all be united in offering assistance to everyone suffering in Puerto Rico and elsewhere in the wake of this awful disaster.

She avoided directly criticizing the president Sunday.

She has been working 24/7.

"Pain, I feel pain", he said.

"This is a time when everyone shows their true colors", she added. But, he said, his administration's first responders are "amazing".

Carmen Yulin Cruz said on CNN: "This is a people-are-dying story".

He said he was not aware of Ms Duke's "good-news" remark. When you are drinking from a creek, it's not a good-news story.

"To return to that island without food for my family would be bad", he said.

"[They are] always trying to find a way to blame the president for things, when they would do much better to figure out how to help", Conway told Fox News' "America's Newsroom" program. "Fastest golf cart you ever took". With no means of communication and roads damaged across the island, hospitals are also without some of the necessary services on which they typically depend, such as companies that cart away cadavers.

The president's weekend tweets have galvanized critics, including prominent artists like "Hamilton" creator Lin-Manuel Miranda and an array of lawmakers, mainly Democrats. "Maybe too busy doing TV?"

Trump, in a tweet earlier this week, first linked the expense of the recovery effort with Puerto Rico's inability to repay more than $70 billion in debt owed to Wall Street.
