SAN FRANCISCO - Austin Hedges lashed a two-strike, two-run double with two outs in the ninth inning Saturday, sending the San Diego Padres to a 3-2 victory over the San Francisco Giants and ruining right-hander Matt Cain's on-field retirement party. Giants' skipper Bruce Bochy approached the mound, incurring a stream of boos from the crowd, but ultimately made a decision to leave the rest of the inning to his starter.

"For (Sandoval) to hit a home run, to walk it off, I know that's special for him and it was cool to see because he's done a nice job since coming here".

Cain is not having a good season. He will finish his 13th season, all of which have been as a Giant, with a 60-60 record in 179 career home starts and 104-118 overall.

Cain dazzled the Padres' end-of-season lineup (admittedly, not an impressive feat in and of itself), spitting four strikeouts, two hits and a walk over five scoreless innings. He gave a long leash to starter Johnny Cueto, who scattered 12 hits and four earned runs over five up-and-down innings of work. Pence left the field to a standing ovation. Instead, the Tigers lost and the Giants won.

The Padres out-hit the Giants 8-6.

Though the Giants have long insisted they've played to win as many games as possible this season, after avoiding the grim potential of a 100-loss campaign with a win on Friday night, San Francisco could have waived the white flag in its season finale. Ted Barrett, who was behind the plate for Cain's flawless game on June 13, 2012, also called the balls and strikes Saturday. He wouldn't take the win - Wil Myers' game-tying home run took care of that in the sixth - but there was no more fitting footnote to an incredible career.
