Bayern are languishing in third place in the Bundesliga, five points behind leaders Borussia Dortmund.

The club could not be immediately reached for a comment.

The Italian was given his marching orders after a 3-0 thrashing by Paris Saint Germain in the Champions League group stage.

German media reported that he could return to Bayern until the end of the season with Hoffenheim coach Julian Nagelsmann tipped to take over for next season.

Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge told the club's official website on the appointment of Heynckes: "There is a great deal of trust between Jupp Heynckes and Bayern". "This has been shown again by the conversations that (president) Uli Hoeness, (sporting director) Hasan Salihamidzic and I have held". We are very grateful to Jupp.

Brazilian authorities have said the behind-the-scenes dealings to win the vote amounted to a "criminal organisation". In the scheme investigated, there would be the participation of former Rio de Janeiro's governor Sérgio Cabral.

Heynckes walked away in June 2013 after Bayern lifted the Bundesliga, Champions League and German Cup trophies in a glorious fortnight.

"I would not have returned to any other club in the world, but Bayern Munich is close to my heart", said Heynckes, vowing to transform the team back into a "successful" squad.

The German champion Bayern Munich was named the new head coach. I and the staff will mobilize all the skills to get this club back to success, "said Heynckes. I'm very much looking forward to this challenge", he added.

The 72-year-old has been named as manager until the end of the season, in his FOURTH spell back at the Bundesliga giants. Guardiola failed to win the Champions League in his three seasons, while Ancelotti's side was outclassed by eventual champion Madrid last season.

It was along with Hermann and Gerland that Heynckes led Bayern to the treble.
