In another air strike, more than 60 mercenaries from the former Soviet Union, Tunisia, and Egypt were killed in the Euphrates Valley south of Deir Ezzor, according to AFP.

The ministry added that the nine terrorists killed were from the North Caucasus region. The strikes were carried after Russian military intelligence in Syria within a week revealed areas of their concentration and command posts near the city of Abu Kamal, as well as routes to the city of Al Mayadin and further to the southern outskirts of the left-bank part of the city of Deir ez-Zor.

About 120 Islamic State (IS) militants and more than 60 foreign mercenaries in Syria were killed in airstrikes launched by Russia over the past 24 hours, the Russian Defense Ministry said Saturday.

ISIS has retained control of the Iraq-Syria border near Mayadeen for three years, using the area to move its fighters and resources between the two countries, which militant leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi declared to be a caliphate for the world's Muslims in July 2014.

Mayadeen is one of the Daesh group's last bastions in Syria.

President Bashar al-Assad's forces have been advancing rapidly in a bid to expel the jihadists from the province.

The Italian was given his marching orders after a 3-0 thrashing by Paris Saint Germain in the Champions League group stage. The 72-year-old has been named as manager until the end of the season, in his FOURTH spell back at the Bundesliga giants.

Syrian government forces entered the town of Mayadeen in the Eastern province of Deir ez-Zor, which still was under the full control of insurgents "Islamic state".

The advances against IS in Deir Ezzor have cost a heavy civilian death toll from Russian and coalition air raids.

The most recent charge against Russian Federation came a day earlier when the Britain-based Human Rights' Observatory Group accused its forces of killing 14 civilians, including 3 children in an air raid carried out near the Euphrates in Al Mayadeen region.

The parallel offensive by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), a US-backed alliance of mainly Kurdish militia, has on numerous occasions hampered the Syrian government's anti-Daesh battles.

The Syrian military shelled Mayadeen overnight and Syrian and Russian warplanes have conducted hundreds of strikes, it said.

Meanwhile, so-called Syrian Observatory for Human Rights on Friday reported fighting in several areas of Dayr al-Zawr Province, where the Syrian army has heavily shelled terrorist positions.
