The official stressed the information was preliminary and investigators haven't uncovered any solid evidence yet.

Clark County, Nev., Sheriff Joseph Lombardo said Wednesday that it's only logical to "make the assumption" that Paddock had "some help at some point" in pulling off Sunday's massacre.

Meanwhile, Paddock's Australian girlfriend, Marilou Danley said she knew him as a "kind, caring, quiet man" and denied any knowledge of his plans to slaughter dozens in Las Vegas.

Paddock killed himself after shooting into a concert crowd, killing 58 and wounding almost 500.

According to the Chicago Tribune, police are now looking into these reports.

"There was a reservation under the name Stephen Paddock", Blackstone spokeswoman Emmy Carragher told AFP.

A Blackstone spokeswoman declined to comment.

The details came to light as investigators struggled to figure out why the 64-year-old high-stakes gambler opened fire on a crowd of 22,000 Sunday night from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay hotel casino. The sold out festival draws 100,000 attendees each day and is considered the hot ticket in town attracting known dignitary kids such as Malia Obama and others.

That said, authorities indicated the scouting of large size venues housing captive large audiences suggested Paddock's intent to kill, as opposed to his particular disdain for any particular sect or class of individual.

The source said Paddock may have "lost his nerve" and checked into the Mandalay Beach Hotel on September 28 instead, The Daily Beast reported.

NBC News reported that he had specifically researched the Lollapalooza festival.

Investigators have said the attack was meticulously planned.

But William Evans said Thursday he could not confirm the report and had not been briefed on the matter.

They say Stephen Paddock rented rooms in high-rises overlooking the Lollapalooza festival in Chicago in August and over the Life is lovely festival near the Vegas Strip in September. There are also reports that he scouted hotels near Fenway Park in Boston. Though activity like this generates an alert, officials said they get tens of thousands of similar alerts every week.

Chicago authorities have confirmed that they are now investigating TMZ's claims. It was held in Grant Park alongside Lake Michigan.

The gunshots stopped at 10:15pm, two minutes before the initially responding officers made their way to Paddock's floor.

Hotel sources who spoke to TMZ said that Paddock was "forceful" in his demands, and that hotel staff gave in.
