Russia Signs S-400 Missiles Deal With Saudi Arabia

The sale of the S-400 surface-to-air missile systems follows King Salman's visit to Moscow last Thursday.

The Pentagon's Defense Security Cooperation Agency said in an October 6 statement that it had notified the U.S. Congress about the possible sale, saying the deal would "support the foreign policy and national security objectives of the United States".

Lockheed Martin Co is the prime contractor for the THAAD system, with Raytheon Co playing an important role in the system's deployment.

Russian Federation and Saudi Arabia have agreed on the supply of S-400 anti-aircraft missile systems, as well as a number of other weapons, including the Kalashnikov AK-103.

Saudi Arabia is a longstanding US ally in the Middle East and its arms deals with Moscow have caused disquiet in Washington.

The United States deployed THAAD to South Korea this year to guard against North Korea's shorter-range missiles.

"The proposed sale of this equipment and support will not alter the basic military balance in the region", it said.

"THAAD's exo-atmospheric, hit-to-kill capability will add an upper-tier to Saudi Arabia's layered missile defence architecture".

During the visit of Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud to Russian Federation last week, deals worth at least 2.1 billion USA dollars were signed, according to a Kremlin statement.
