Ben Simmons Says Joel Embiid is Unstoppable

Recently leaked video of Embiid jogging through the streets of Philadelphia and playing tennis suggested that he is physically ready.

The deal represents the 76ers' commitment to Embiid's talent, given that he has been healthy enough to play in only 31 regular-season games since Philadelphia selected him with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2014 National Basketball Association draft.

The Philadelphia 76ers agreed to a contract extension with Embiid worth the maximum a player coming off a rookie deal may earn.

Embiid is one of the most-talented young players in the league, but this is a pretty huge bet on a guy who's yet to prove he can stay healthy for even half of a season. He also grabbed almost eight rebounds in 25.4 minutes per contest, averaged 2.5 blocks, and shot 36.7 percent from three, stretching defenses with his range, driving to the hole at will, and getting to the line, averaging almost eight free throw attempts per game last season. He missed his first two seasons with right foot woes and suffered a knee injury last season that ended his campaign after 31 games.

There will be a fair amount of questions about the timing of the deal, and they're warranted. If he hits one of those triggers, Embiid stands to make up to $178 million, according to Wojnarowski.

The Sixers are counting on Embiid and No. 1 overall picks Ben Simmons and Markelle Fultz to carry the team from the bottom of the league into an Eastern Conference playoff team.

Those injury concerns have carried over into this season, as recovery from the meniscus surgery that ended Embiid's season in March has kept him from participating in any of Philadelphia's first three preseason games, though he is participating in five-on-five portions of practice.

We all know Embiid's injury history. If left unsigned, Embiid would have become a restricted free agent next summer.

Joel Embiid just got paid.

If he can stay healthy and effective, it will be well worth it for both parties.

We'll have to wait and see just how big the Sixers' bet is, but they've made it and there is no turning back now.

For starters, this is a clear sign that the Sixers are fully committed to building the franchise around the 23-year-old. To go through two injuries back-to-back years and then come out and do what he did last year, he deserves every single dollar of that.
