The waterproof Kindle is finally here!

In that, they are however no better than paper books, but Amazon has just taken their Kindle to the next level, finally offering the one feature paper books just can't beat.

Whereas the original Kindle Oasis was able to boast a staggering 9 week battery life with its charging case attached, the new one achieves a still extremely impressive 7 weeks and manages it without a special battery-pack case.

"Ten years ago, we introduced our first Kindle with the mission of delivering any book ever written in 60 seconds or less", Amazon devices and service senior vice president Dave Limp said. Amazon says this allows for the new Oasis to cram 30% more words on every page, meaning you won't be needing to turn the page as often. The device still has its signature asymmetrical design.

The company is celebrating the line's upcoming 10th anniversary (November 19) a month or so early with an update to the the high-end Kindle Oasis. More appealing to my eyes are the water-safe fabric covers, though, in tactile Indigo, Sandstone, or charcoal.

The Kindle Oasis will begin shipping on October 31, and is priced at $250 for the 8GB model and $280 for the 32GB model. After all, who doesn't like reading a good book on the poolside? All are available today for pre-order globally. The new snap-on covers are also waterproof, and will sell from £39. Amazon also has the $200 flat-front-but-not-waterproof Voyage, the $120 Paperwhite (our humbler but still very functional Editors' Choice), and the $80 frills-free baseline Kindle.

Kate Middleton makes first public appearance since pregnancy announcement
Her condition, known as hyperemesis gravidarum , forced her to be hospitalised in 2012 while pregnant with George, aged four. If Kate Middleton is absent since the announcement of her pregnancy, her return has recently been announced.

How is the new waterproof Kindle Oasis different from the original model? Amazon says that its new device has the highest resolution screen on any Kindle. It also has a marked advantage when attempting to read image-heavy works, like comics, on the thing (though comics on an e-reader is still a big no-go, as far as I'm concerned). And it also has ambient light sensors that adjust the brightness as you move from room to room, or from outdoors to indoors.

Waterproofing might have been long-waited by a lot of Kindle users, but Amazon has also added support for audiobooks. The Kindle Oasis has been built to withstand getting splashed at the beach or dropped in the pool.

The Kindle Oasis has a thicker side that tapers down on the other side for easier one-handed use.

Though Amazon assures me that, thanks to the relative thinness of the device, it's managed to keep it small enough to slip into the pockets on a pair of trousers. Amazon reduced the new Oasis's bezel size and moved to a slightly larger frame to fit in the bigger screen.
