This Year's Flu Season Gearing Up to Surpass 2016

Northcott said the Health Alliance will be having daily flu shot clinics for staff beginning October 19 until the end of November.

These include children aged two to eight, people aged 65 and over, pregnant women and those with long-term health conditions. But why people need their flu shot every year?

Last week, a total of 612 patients in North Carolina were tested for the flu, with six tests coming back with positive.

Nurses, together with doctors and other healthcare workers, will also get letters "reminding them of their professional duty to protect patients by being vaccinated".

It follows an earlier warning from NHS England's chief executive that the signs from Australia and New Zealand were for a "heavy flu season", with hospitals in those countries "struggling to cope".

All currently-enrolled students can get a flu shot at the University's Health Services Office.

The flu shot provides protection from the influenza virus strains expected to be circulating this season based on worldwide trends identified by the World Health Organization.

Vaccinations will be available by walk-in only for individuals age 3 and older.

Trinity County Public Health will begin its annual countywide seasonal influenza campaign today. Each flu season, the vaccine is tailored to protect against the most common strains of the current year.

"We actually aren't really doing anything different this year than we would any other year because we always go into flu season anticipating ... the worst that can happen", she said. Even mild symptoms can spread the flu.

Meanwhile, as part of intensified winter preparations, a new "national emergency pressure panel" will be set up to advise on actions to be taken if the NHS faces significant pressures.
