Among many historic steps, the executive order followed through on one of my most important campaign promises to so many of you: to prevent the horrendous Johnson Amendment from interfering with your First Amendment rights.

The president hit further applause lines in a room that had earlier been treated to a speaker wearing an industrial apron in order to "drain the swamp" and an unflattering photo of Hillary Clinton shown for the objective of mockery.

This will be the third time Trump addresses the conservative gathering, after previously speaking at the event in 2015 as a candidate and then in 2016 as the Republican presidential nominee.

"We're taking a little different route than we had hoped because getting Congress - they've forgotten what their pledges were", Trump said, referring to multiple plans he's rolled out in the past 24 hours to undermine the health care law.

The president also touched on a topic that he often discussed on the campaign trail - that our culture should welcome back people and say "Merry Christmas" around the holidays. "They'll have it painted but they don't say - guess what, we're saying Merry Christmas again".

Tell us how you really feel, Paul. We don't worship government, we worship God.

Trump promises to restore "moral clarity" to the United States' view of the world.

But he said conservative religious activists chose to vote for him, even if they didn't know who he really was when they went to the polls last November.

But he mistakenly said he had spoken to "the president" of the Virgin Islands.
