Khader secured 65,227 votes against Basheer's 41,917. The counting completed around 10.30am on Sunday at PSMO College Tirurangai in Malappuram. In 2016 assembly election, UDF candidate P K Kunhalikkutty won the constituency by defeating his immediate rival P P Basheer of CPM by a huge margin of 38,057 votes. However, the UDF's victory margin was less than it received in the 2016 assembly polls, in the segment considered to be a stronghold of IUML.

Though the victory of KN Khader was on predictable lines, but what has surprised the pundits is the emergence of Muslim hardline party SDPI, which ended in the third place pushing BJP candidate into the fourth spot. He added that he already got feedback from the field that the UDF will not get the majority that Kunhalikutty had secured.

Meanwhile the BJP, which has been trying to find a footprint in the constituency through consolidation around 30,000 Hindu votes, will be disappointed with a fall in its vote share this time. After a Cabinet meeting, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan also announced that criminal cases for sexual assault will be filed against the UDF leaders whose names figured in the letter written by solar case accused Saritha Nair whose company cheated scores of people for crores of rupees by offering cheap solar panels.Reacting to the result, Mr Khader said he dedicated the victory to the ordinary people who supported the UDF. "The voting pattern shows the nexus between CPI (M) and BJP". Their lead in every panchayat has crashed compared to last Assembly election. The Vengara Assembly constituency had witnessed 72.12 per cent polling. Talking to media after the election results, KNA Khader said that the result was victory of common voters of the constituency.
