Despite the President's attacks being condemned by newspaper columnists and Democratic politicians, findings of the new poll seem to indicate that the increasing attacks on the media appear to have struck a chord with Trump's Republican base.

While President Trump's frequent claims of fake news are often mocked by the media, a recent Politico/Morning Consult poll shows that nearly half of US voters, 46 percent, agree that the media literally makes up news stories about Trump and the Trump administration.

After hurricanes struck Texas and Florida in late August and early September, 64 percent of Americans said they approved of how Trump managed the federal response.

The poll found that the divide is very partisan - 76 percent of Republican voters think the news media invents stories about Trump and his administration, while just 11 percent don't think they make up stories.

The poll found that 85% of voters who "strongly approve" of Trump's job performance also believe the media fabricates stories about him.

"Dishonesty in the media is one of the things that surprised me the most", Trump said.

The findings come after a relentless campaign by Mr Trump against the media in the nine months he has been in office.

The number of respondents who expressed distrust for the media was highest among Trump's staunchest supporters. "NBC is a total joke". "But the media is absolutely dishonest - and frankly, I've never seen anything quite like it".

The poll was conducted October 12-16, "surveying 1,991 registered voters". Trump's rating is down 9 percentage points among Republicans, 25 points among Democrats and 22 points among independents.
