"During one of those search operations, the body of a small child was discovered in the area of East Spring Valley Road and South Bowser Road", Richardson Police Sgt. Kevin Perlich said Sunday, according to KTVT. "So until we have a positive identification we are not going to say it is Sherin".

Sherin Matthews had been reported missing on October 7 after she was allegedly sent to her backyard in the middle of the night by her father, Wesley Mathews, as punishment for not drinking milk. He told police he believed she would return, so he waited five hours before calling police to report her missing.

Wesley Mathews was later arrested for abandoning or endangering a child. He was freed after posting bond.

Rafael De La Garza, an attorney for Wesley Mathews, told The Dallas Morning News after Monday's hearing that his client was "mourning the death of his child", but he didn't address the criminal charges. Mathews had called the police to report about his missing daughter five hours later.

The body was found close to the family home and police say it hasn't been positively identified but they have no reason to believe it is a different child.

On Sunday investigators found a body while searching for the youngster.

Investigators combed Sherins neighborhood and surrounding area with K-9 teams, drones and helicopters and executed a search warrant at the Mathews home on October 10, police said.

Sherin's parents are also expected in court Monday to regain custody of their 4-year-old daughter who was removed from the home by Child Protective Services. The mother, Sini, said she was asleep when the incident took place. "Indian Embassy in USA is actively involved and they keep me informed", Swaraj tweeted on October 19.

The search for Sherin drew the participation of many agencies including the US Marshals, FBI, and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. "We have established contact with the community and authorities", Indias Consul General in Houston, Anupam Ray had tweeted.
