Bengals QB AJ McCarron almost traded to Browns

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Browns and Bengals discussed a deal that got "close" to completion, but nothing was finalized.

The Browns had worked out a deal with the Bengals to acquire quarterback A.J. McCarron just before the trade deadline. The league disagreed. AJ McCarron is staying with the Bengals.

The Browns were reportedly sending the Bengals a 2018 second and third round pick for the quarterback and then they remembered they were the Browns and good things aren't allowed to happen to them. Radio's Tony Grossi reported the Browns were celebrating the trade and forgot to call in the deal before the deadline, according to college Aaron Goldhammer.

One of the reasons for the friction between Brown and Jackson is the refusal to stand pat and draft either Carson Wentz in 2016 or Deshaun Watson this past April, instead valuing picks more than the chance to land either dynamic young QB.

While the ball was in the Browns court, they fumbled. He completed 66.4 percent of his passes in seven appearances during the 2015 regular season, throwing for six touchdowns and two interceptions.

Jackson had previously coached McCarron as the Bengals' offensive coordinator from 2014-15.

DeShone Kizer won the starting job in Cleveland this preseason. Cody Kessler and Kevin Hogan aren't cutting it, either. The rookie was considered a raw prospect coming into the league, and he was expected to need time to develop into a viable starter. Now he knows exactly what the team really thinks of his ability.
