While the New England Patriots signaled Tom Brady is their quarterback for the foreseeable future by trading Jimmy Garoppolo, there may be an end in sight for the Patriots' leader, Bill Belichick. "It's definitely not something that we wanted to walk away from and I felt like we rode it out as long as we could".

"At this point, we felt like we had to make a decision", he said.

If the team had chose to keep the backup beyond Tuesday's trade deadline, it faced the real possibility of losing him for free this upcoming March. The former was drafted in the second round, No. 62 overall by the team back in 2014. He has played in 17 games in three seasons with the Patriots, including two starts in 2016 while Brady was serving a four-game suspension.

"I have a tremendous amount of respect for Jimmy", said the Patriots head coach, via ESPN. "I couldn't ask him to give more than he's given us", Belichick said Tuesday in a conference call with local beat writers. As his career moves forward, we have to look at our team, this year and beyond. I'm sure they have a quarterback in mind who they're going to bring in to back up Tom Brady, and the transition is going to be pretty easy. We did what we felt was best for the team.

That very well could be Brian Hoyer, who was released after the 49ers acquired Garoppolo. The Patriots coach clearly expected Brady to decline sooner. He subsequently earned starts with the Arizona Cardinals, Cleveland Browns, Houston Texans, Chicago Bears and San Francisco, going 16-21.

For his career, Garoppolo has thrown 94 passes and completed 63 for a 67 completion percentage.

The 49ers are 0-8 on the season and have used two different quarterbacks this season.

Previously believed to be the top suitor for Washington Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins in free agency, the 49ers either got word of Cousins staying put, or were scared off by his potential asking price, and pulled the trigger on a deal with the Pats.
