A day after the deadly terrorist attack in NY that killed at least eight people, President Trump said suspect Sayfullo Saipov should get the death penalty and that he would consider sending him to Guantanamo as an enemy combatant even though he has already been charged in civilian court. The president is now hoping to end that visa programme.

President Trump said that alleged terrorist Sayfullo Saipov "should get the death penalty" in a tweet late Thursday.

ISIS fanatic Saipov, a 29-year-old migrant from Uzbekistan, was said to be "gleeful" as he recovered in hospital from police bullet wounds in his stomach. He was shot in the abdomen by a police officer, arrested and taken to a New York City hospital.

As the charges are federal, the government can override NY state's ban on capital punishment. "Should move fast. DEATH PENALTY!" He should not be read Miranda Rights, as enemy combatants are not entitled to them.

The president also called the USA criminal justice system as it applies to terrorism suspects "a joke" and "a laughingstock".

The president had said Wednesday he would consider sending Saipov to Guantanamo Bay.

President Donald Trump is calling for the death penalty against the man charged with mowing down pedestrians and bikers in New York City, raising the question of whether his rhetoric could imperil prosecutors' efforts in the case.

Williams then asked her producer for tissues before explaining why she chose to reach for the back of her head on her way down. Wendy Williams was in the middle of her show's annual " How You Doin' Halloween Costume Contest" when the incident happened.

Saipov is being held without bail at a Manhattan federal lockup next to the courthouse. "Tell that to people in the Pentagon", Graham said in a reference to the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.

Outside court, Saipov's attorney said he hoped "everyone lets the judicial process play out".

"Would love to send the NYC terrorist to Guantanamo but statistically that process takes much longer than going through the Federal system", Trump tweeted in the morning.

Of those killed on Tuesday, five were Argentine tourists, who were among a group of friends visiting NY to celebrate the 30th anniversary of their high school graduation, one was a Belgian citizen, one was a NY resident and one lived in New Jersey.

But legal experts argue that Trump's public support for giving Saipov the death penalty may actually make that sentence harder to reach in court.

"Particularly in NY, if he's for it, we're against it", Kuby said.
