New iPad 2018 model tipped with iPhone X facial recognition tech

Apple is working on a redesigned iPad that would remove the device's home button in favor of the new Face ID system introduced on the iPhone X.

The tablet will reportedly launch in 2018 and not only add Face ID, but will have an updated design with "noticeably" smaller bezels than previous iPad Pro models.

The upgraded tablet would likely sit at the top of the iPad line, which would probably make it an iPad Pro, and would not pack in an OLED screen in addition to the other changes it would inherit from the iPhone X. It's said to be similar in size to the 10.5-inch iPad Pro, at least (no word yet on a 12.9 version), with a release date late in the year.

Apple is unlikely to use OLED for the 2018 iPad lineup and will stick with LCD, according to the report. Samsung is already making the OLED displays for the iPhone X, and the company also makes the OLED displays for its Galaxy tablets and the Windows 10-powered Galaxy Book convertible.

While the new iPad Pro concept looks visually flawless, Twitter has been quick to react pointing out that a bezel-less display of that magnitude may cause problems, with some worrying that accidental touches may hamper the user experience. Still, the iPad has brought Apple $4.8 billion of revenue in the past quarter alone.

One key iPhone X enhancement that is unlikely to make its way to iPads next year is an OLED - or organic light-emitting diode - screen, according to people familiar with Apple's supply chain. The sources say it is because of a combination of financial and technical constraints, namely because Apple would need Samsung Electronics to supply these panels. With the recent news making the 2018 iPad Pro updates seem more and more likely, Benjamin Geskin has shared how stunning an nearly bezel-less iPad Pro could be. The report also said the Apple is preparing a new version of the Apple Pencil to unveil along with the new tablets. Apple's facial recognition feature is used like Touch ID to unlock a user's device and for approving payments using Apple Pay.
