Niantic seems to have set its sights on yet another enormous fan base with plans for a Harry Potter mobile augmented reality game.

Another interesting bit about this game is the reveal of a new "Portkey Games", a part of Warner Bros. Interactive and its new sub brand Portkey Games. The games will vary from mobile to console games, and will feature both new characters and - excitingly - could feature familiar characters "at different points in their lives" from the Harry Potter stories.

Niantic is regarded as the leader in the augmented reality gaming space.

There is now no release date or launch window given, but there is an official website live that you can visit right here.

The developer behind Pokemon Go is working on a Harry Potter game.

Niantic Labs, who you know from smartphones titles such Ingress and Pokemon Go, have their next project lined up and it could be another big one.

Niantic, the company that makes the hit mobile game "Pokémon Go", is now making a smartphone game set in the universe of J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter. The website is scant on information, but you will be able to sign up for updates about the game in the future. The idea is that it would let players virtually immerse themselves in Rowling's magical world, overlaid on their real-world surroundings via smartphones.

Of course, being a wizard in the Harry Potter universe is all about deadly combat, so the multiplayer aspect could involve a sort of hide-and-seek match where Team Voldemort and Team Hogwarts have to chase each other around. In fact, there will be a "significant influence" from Ingress, which allows players to roam their real world while also collecting power-ups, defending locations, and exploring their environment. The app became the most successful mobile game in United States history - becoming more popular than Tinder, and briefly matching Twitter's popularity.
