Grades Up: Texas Tech Athletes Earn Highest Ever Graduation Success Rate

The GSR numbers for most colleges are much higher than the federal graduation rates, which counts any student who leaves an institution as a nongraduate and does not track incoming transfers.

In men's basketball, the Hokies' GSR was 80 percent, a number that ranked tied for eighth in the ACC and was two percentage points above the FBS national average.

University of Kentucky student-athletes broke one school record for graduation rate and tied another in the annual report issued Wednesday by the National Collegiate Athletic Association.

"The Student-Athlete Success Program staff and our coaches continue to foster a culture of academic success and our student-athletes have embraced this fully while continuing to perform at elite levels in competition", director of athletics David Benedict said.

Opposition leader Bill Shorten said he was prepared to "meet with Turnbull on Wednesday and engage constructively". The declaration will be made through the parliamentary register of members' and senators' interests.

Auburn Athletics' federal graduation rate was 69 percent, matching last year's program best. Arkansas' previous GSR score was 78 a year ago and the latest score is 33 percent higher than the 60 it received in the NCAA's first report in 2005. In this decade, Rutgers has earned GSR scores of 88 (2009-10), 89 (2010-11), 91 (2011-12), 85 (2012-13), 83 (2013-14), 83 (2014-15), 82 (2015-16) and 82 (2016-17).

The football team garnered a score of 80 percent, which was an improvement on last year's 76 percent mark. The NCAA also calculates the federal graduation rate for student-athletes because it is the only rate by which to compare student-athletes with the general student body. "Our goal is to always give our student-athletes the tools to thrive on the playing field as well as the classroom". Six teams have a 100 percent GSR: men's fencing, rifle, pistol, men's volleyball, women's tennis and women's volleyball. Student-athletes who leave an institution while in good academic standing before exhausting athletics eligibility are removed from the cohort of their initial institution (essentially passed to another squad's GSR cohort if they transfer and removed altogether in the case of early departures for professional careers).

The GSR takes into account the many different academic paths followed by today's college students.

"The consistency of these data across years is a tribute to the dedicated hard work of our student-athletes, but also to the coaches and administrators who understand the academic demands of our institution", Davidson said.
