3 killed, 20 missing in Andhra boat accident

Several teams of National Disaster Relief Force (NDRF) were rushed to the spot to rescue people.

According to the Newspaper, The boat with around 38 persons was heading to the Pavitra Sangamam Ferry ghat near Ibrahimpatnam.Fifteen persons were rescued by local fishermen. Search and rescue operation going on. The boat belonging to private operator Simple Water Sports, was bringing tourists from Bhavani Island, a popular tourist spot, to Pavitra Sangamam near Ferry on the outskirts of Vijayawada, to participate in a religious programme on the occasion of Telugus' auspicious Kartheeka Masam.

Most of the passengers were said to be members of the Ongole Walkers Club in Prakasam district while some were from Nellore who were on a visit to Vijayawada. Five bodies were later recovered from under the boat.

This incident comes after 22 people died after a boat capsized on Yamuna River in Uttar Pradesh's Baghpat. They had travelled to Bhavani Island by an AP Tourism Development Corporation boat. 35 people boarded the boat which has the capacity of only 15 people. Local media reports suggested the boat was overloaded with passengers and the buoyancy of water changed leading to the disaster. They inquired with the APTDC regarding the availability of a boat, but were told that the boat service had been stopped due to poor light in the evening.

Tourism Minister Akhila Priya ordered probe into the incident.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has condoled the loss of lives in the mishap. A helpline with toll free number 18004250101 was opened to help the relatives of the victims to get the information.
