Children, 2 Adults Injured in Stairwell Collapse

At least 21 kids were injured Saturday evening after a stairwell collapsed inside a recreation facility in the southwestern US city of San Diego.

Almost two dozen people were injured Saturday night when a wooden platform collapsed during a birthday party at a San Diego gym, officials said.

Twenty-one children and two adults were hospitalized.

Officials responded to the scene, near the intersection of Main and Sigsbee streets in the Barrio Logan neighborhood, just before 7 p.m., the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department said on Twitter.

The gym's owner and founder Jessica Ho issued a statement to ABC which said: "We are truly heartbroken tonight, as these children and their parents aren't just our members - we see them weekly, they are our gym family".

Wright said the fire department is still investigating what caused the structure to fail.

The SDFD was not immediately available for further comment to PEOPLE.

Joe Saari, a parent of two children, who suffered minor bruises due to the collapse, said that when he and his wife dropped off their kids at the facility, there were 100 to 150 kids at the center. It was pizza time inside the Vault PK Parkour Gym. "I had my own children there tonight". My heart aches for the families who call Vault PK home.

"We are working with authorities and will continue to do so to resolve this".
