We've reached out to HTC to ask after a western launch. The Vive Focus headset is basically the same headset that would have come to North America. In place of external motion sensors like the ones the Vive and Oculus Rift use to track movement, the Vive Focus features inside-out 6-degrees-of-freedom (6DoF) "world-scale" tracking. The new Vive Focus adds counter balance to eliminate strain.

The first, called the Oculus Go, matches the capabilities of smartphone-based headsets.

Yes. HTC introduced the HTC Vive VR headset in 2015, and by late 2016, the company was rumoured to be working on a second-generation version, codenamed Oasis.

"This really can be seen as a new step to maturity of the VR market". At the time, HTC confirmed that it would be releasing a Vive-branded standalone device under this initiative.

The Vive Focus runs on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 VR platform with instant-on support while inside the headset there is a "high-resolution" AMOLED screen.

Over 35 Chinese and global content developers have already built VR content optimised for Vive Wave, with 14 showing live demos at the event. It is an open interface that is created to allow interoperability between numerous mobile headsets and accessories. "What's more, with the new Vive Focus, we are excited to bring high-quality 6DoF VR experiences, which were previously only available on tethered devices, in a more convenient and portable form factor".

What is HTC Vive Wave?

Twelve hardware partners, including Quanta Computer Inc (廣達), Pimax, Nubia Technology Co Ltd (努比亞) and iQiyi (愛奇藝), have reportedly pledged their support for the integration of Vive Wave VR into their future products.

Vive Focus pricing and availability are yet to be revealed. Unity will now integrate with Viveport and provide a more intuitive way for Unity developers to use the new Vive Wave VR SDK.

HTC also confirmed that content designed for the HTC Vive will be downgraded to work smoothly with 20ms low latency on the HTC Vive Focus, but noted that this would be an nearly automatic process using the OpenVR-compatible SDK to optimize the content for medium-level hardware.
