Unemployment Down Slightly in ME in October

The Manhattan area continued to have the lowest unemployment rate in the state, at 2.3 percent.

"The low unemployment rate and job gains are indicators of the ongoing strength of the economy in MA". There were 19,600 more unemployed residents over the year compared to October 2016. In Lincoln, the rate dropped from 2.3% to 2.1%.

And it's three-tenths of a percent better than that rate of 4.1 percent, which was the lowest in nearly 17 years.

The state's total unemployment rate dropped to 3.7% in October, the Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development announced. Only Hawaii, at 2.2 percent, and North Dakota, at 2.5 percent, had lower rates.

"The 2.2 percent unemployment rate is the lowest unemployment rate on record dating back to 1976, under current methodology", DLIR Director Linda Chu Takayama said in a statement. Honolulu City and County saw its rate decrease from 2.3 percent in September to 1.8 percent last month.

Job gains were reported in sectors including educational and health services, leisure and hospitality, financial activities, professional and business services, other services, and trade, transportation and utilities.
