Dimitrov defeats Goffin to win ATP Finals title

Both aged 26, Dimitrov and Goffin are hardly fledglings on the tour but there is still time for each to enjoy greater success at major tournaments.

"I was in my match which was the important thing". The American played a creative tennis, Dimitrov was more and more tense, and on 4-all the Bulgarian was broken again. He opened the second set with fight; holding another impressive service game before breaking Federer and then holding his second service game to love.

At 26, Goffin is part of tennis' so-called lost generation, a group of players who have been unable to break the status quo of the Big Four of Nadal, Federer, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray, and one now coming under fire from a younger group below, led by Alex Zverev.

Goffin won back-to-back titles in Shenzhen and Tokyo this season and this week became the first man in two years to defeat both Nadal and Federer at the same tournament.

The 19-time Grand Slam victor said he was disappointed to finish the year on this note and wished he could have played a more attacking tennis. "But my belief was so good today and I'm glad I managed to win".

And the set duly stayed on serve until the eighth game, when an unfortunate net cord for Sock was followed by two double faults in quick succession that offered Dimitrov two chances to break. "Then the semi-final, to beat Roger for the first time here in such a big event, big tournament, it was the ideal moment", Goffin, who beat a hobbling Nadal on Monday, said.

The Belgian opened the match well, acing Federer twice, but he threw away a game point allowing his opponent to swoop in and claim the first game easily.

Goffin saved three match points on his own serve, but Dimitrov kept his cool, taking the second opportunity on his own delivery to close it out. I think I just, after that break, that breakpoint at 3-0 in the first set, I think was a little bit of a turning point I felt for him.

"He started to put more balls in the court. I'm just so humbled to be able to play the final tomorrow". The mistakes were starting to creep in as Sock pushed Dimitrov hard on the attack; forcing him wide off the court and then forcing a sprint with a slice drop shot. Nicknamed "Baby Fed" early in his career for the similarity of style in his game to the Swiss, Dimitrov has struggled to live up to the comparison, slipping to 17th in the rankings at the end of the 2016 season. "I had the best time of my life this year, so can't wait to go back there". We know each other very well.
