On the other hand, Barclaycard estimated that spending was up eight per cent on the day - boosted by online sales despite the varying emphasis retailers gave to online or in-store campaigns in their Black Friday strategies.

Amazon said Friday that orders were being placed "at record levels", with more than 200,000 toys sold in the first five hours of the day, CNN reported.

Adobe Analytics, meanwhile, saw a 17.9% rise in the dollar value of online sales on Black Friday and Thanksgiving, to $7.9 billion. Earlier on Friday, Macy's CEO Jeff Gennette told The Associated Press said he was pleased with the kickoff to the season.

ShopperTrak added that after Black Friday, Dec. 23 and Dec. 16 - both Saturdays - will be the second and third busiest shopping days of the season.

"Brands and retailers will offer an array of great deals on electronic devices".

Adobe Analytics said Cyber Monday is expected to drive $6.6 billion in internet sales, which would make it the largest USA online shopping day in history. "The big story this holiday season is in mobile shopping", CNBC reported, quoting Mickey Mericle, Vice president of Adobe's Marketing and Customer Insights division.
