The Badgers defeated the Golden Gophers 31-0.

Clemson and Miami face off in the ACC title game with a playoff spot on the line, while Georgia and Auburn meet for the SEC crown with the same stakes. The committee is then debating whether Ohio State's clearly superior wins, and a conference championship, outweigh its one bad, blowout loss in a debate with the Crimson Tide.

On Tuesday night, the selection committee released its final incomplete top 25 of the season, with necessary reshuffling after last week's top two teams, Alabama and Miami, lost. Miami slipped after taking its first loss of the season last week from No. 2 to seventh, just ahead of Ohio State at eighth. Also in the top five were No. 1 Clemson, No. 3 Oklahoma, No. 4 Wisconsin and No. 5 Alabama. "Those teams are close", said committee chairman Kirby Hocutt, the athletic director at Texas Tech.

The Miami Hurricanes have dropped out of the top four in the penultimate College Football Playoff poll.

Ohio State would finish as 11-2 Big Ten champions. A win and Georgia is in the field of four in all logical likelihood.

Clemson is back at the top of college football.

Ohio State (10-2, 8-1 Big Ten) is coming off a 31-20 win over MI. The Crimson Tide's resume has no wins against teams now in the top 15 and it is done playing, but the Buckeyes have two losses by double digits, including a 31-point blowout at Iowa. Does No. 10 Southern California have a chance if the Trojans blow out Stanford in the Pac-12 title game Friday night? That too would create a leapfrog risk for the Buckeyes as a conference champion jumping above the Tide at the end.

Second, there's the matter of the comparable weakness of the wins Alabama does have. The Sooners and Buckeyes would both be 11-2 with a loss to a top-10 team and a loss to a 7-5 team. Wisconsin at No. 4 slightly improves the odds for Ohio State if they take down the Badgers.

The possibility of Clemson losing to Miami but getting into the playoff anyway is on the table.

If Georgia had beaten Auburn, Alabama would have clinched the SEC West before the Iron Bowl. Auburn looks guaranteed to be the first if the Tigers beat Georgia. If TCU beats Oklahoma in the Big 12 title game, it's almost unfathomable that the Horned Frogs move all the way up from No. 11. The Tigers might have some cushion. The two teams meet in the AAC championship game, with the victor likely playing in the Peach Bowl.

Hate is a strong word. Ohio State (10-2), 9. It will be a rematch of a game handedly won by Auburn just a few weeks ago, but the victor is practically guaranteed to get one of the four available spots in this year's College Football Playoff.

Say TCU beats Oklahoma and Ohio State beats Wisconsin.

The only way Alabama could get in over Ohio State, because it's not going to on paper, is if the committee just said - the coaches in the room looked around and said, "I wouldn't want to play them".
