Armed Israeli settlers raid Palestinian village, throw rocks at locals

The Israeli army said the shooter, one of two armed escorts, was defending the hikers, a group of about twenty 13-year-old boys, when Palestinians began throwing stones at them. He was announced dead few minutes later.

Palestinian farmers are often targets of Israeli settler aggression, with them commonly attacking Palestinians tending their land.

Almanam added that "one of the settlers shot him and he was gravely injured and died at a local clinic".

But the Israeli military claims that Odeh was shot after "throwing stones" and "lightly wounding two settlers", during the confrontation.

The military said medical teams rushed to the scene to try to save the Palestinian.

Navy spokesperson Enrique Balbi said the mission had "extended for more than twice what is estimated for a rescue". At the sub's home naval base in Mar del Plata, relatives were hit hard by Thursday's announcement.

According to human rights activists, the slain Palestinian was working in his field when he was shot, and the mob only arrived at the scene later.

The Samaria Regional Council said the incident was an attempted lynching in which some 100 Palestinians took part.

The Israeli army frequently carries out wide-ranging arrest campaigns in the occupied West Bank on the pretext that it is searching for "wanted" Palestinians. Several isolated hard-line settlements are in the area, situated near Palestinian villages and Nablus.

An Israeli man was stabbed to death in the southern Israeli city of Arad in what police said was "most probably a terrorist attack".

According to official Palestinian figures, more than 6,300 Palestinians are now being held in detention facilities throughout Israel.

The Israel Defence Forces said the father shot at Odeh in "self-defense".
