USGS reports 5.1 magnitude quake felt throughout East Coast

A magnitude 4.1 natural disaster struck DE on Thursday in a rare seismological occurrence for the U.S. Northeast, officials said, with the temblor's strength equaling the estimated magnitude of an 1871 quake that was believed to be the largest ever in the state.

The quake was about 6 miles east-northeast of Dover and was registered at a depth of 4 miles.

Reports of shaking from the natural disaster were reported in New York City and Long Island and as far north as Kingston in New York State.

The Maryland Emergency Management Office said the quake was felt by many in the state neighbouring DE to the west.

Hundreds of people said they felt it.

Initial reports stated the quake was a 5.1 magnitude, but has since been downgraded to a 4.4.

The station also writes that Paul Caruso, a geophysicist with the USGS, says there is potential for aftershocks.

"I was talking with the other seismologists and we said, 'Wow, we don't ever remember a quake in DE", he said. Workers at the statehouse in Dover streamed into the streets after the quake to see what happened.

Caruso said he didn't expect any significant damage, given the small size of the quake.

Husam Albarmawi, a 30-year-old graduate student at the University of Maryland, rushed out of an apartment tower with his wife when they felt two separate jolts roughly 20 seconds apart in their 23rd-story apartment.
