Delhi most unsafe, tops crime chart among 19 major cities

In 2016, 35,849 such cases were registered, an increase of 7.2% over the 33,433 cases of 2015.

The annual publication of NCRB released by Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh said a total of 48,31,515 "congnizable" crimes were reported in 2016, showing an increase of 2.6 per cent, over the 47,10,676 cases reported in 2015.

Kidnapping and abduction of children accounted for 52.3% of the cases followed by cases reported under POCSO (Protection of Children Against Sexual Offences Act) - 34.4%.

The national capital recorded the highest crime rate (974.9), followed by Kerala a (727.6), Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, and Assam in 2016 in IPC crimes.

As per the NCRB, UP was the state where the maximum number of crimes took place previous year, while Delhi reported the highest crime rate.

Cases of juveniles in conflict with the law have gone up again after a dip of 13.1% was registered in 2015 over 2014.

However, the number of cases has come down by 7% from 6,396 in 2015 to 5,942 in 2016. Madhya Pradesh reported the highest number of cases of atrocities against STs accounting for 27.8% followed by Rajasthan with 18.2% (1,195 cases) and Odisha with 10.4% (681 cases). In 2015, 365 cases of crime were recorded to have taken placec against foreigners.

The national capital also recorded the highest crime rate of 182.1 compared to the national average of 77.2 and reported the highest number of murders - 479 out of 2,194 cases (21.8 percent), followed by Bengaluru 10.4 percent (229 cases) and Patna 8.9 percent (195 cases). Of the four major offences - criminal breach of trust, cheating, forgery, and counterfeiting - the highest number of cases were reported under cheating.

During 2016, IPC crimes reported charge sheeting rate of 72.9% and conviction rate of 46.8% in the country. The next highest incidence was recorded in Maharashtra, at nearly 10 per cent, while Puducherry witnessed 8.6 per cent of such crimes.

Of the total crimes, 29,75,711 are those registered under Indian Penal Code (IPC) and 18,55,804 under Special and Local Laws (SLL), the NCRB data said.

Other crimes in which the state has alarming figures are assault with intent to disrobe (highest in country), human trafficking (third highest) and robbery (highest).

In the country's top 19 metropolitan cities with a population over 20 lakh, Mumbai ranks 3rd in the share of crime incidents, preceded only by Delhi and Chennai.

Delhi UT with 1,14,751 notes (worth Rs. 5,65,21,460) has reported maximum number of seizure of Fake Indian Currency Notes (FICN) followed by Gujarat 39,725 notes (worth Rs. 2,37,24,050) and West Bengal 32,869 notes (worth Rs. 2,32,95,800) during 2016.
