Calling for ballot papers to be brought back, Bahujan Samaj Party supremo Mayawati on Saturday said that if EVMs are not used, BJP can not come to power.

BSP chief Mayawati, who had in March raised doubts over EVMs after the assembly elections, threw an open challenge to the BJP to hold the 2019 Lok Sabha polls using ballot papers.

Rejecting charges of irregularities in Urban Local Bodies elections and tampering of Electronic Voting Machines levelled by Bahujan Samaj Party, the State BJP accused Opposition parties of "spreading misinformation to hide their frustration" after losing the ULB poll.

The BJP has won 14 of the total 16 mayoral seats.

Uttam said had Akhilesh Yadav campaigned extensively, the results would have been much different and the BJP would have been wiped out in the urban body polls. "If BJP is honest & believes in democracy then discard EVMs & conduct voting on Ballot papers".

Vaibhav Maheshwari, the party's state spokesman said the BJP should definitely be anxious as the urban body polls have not been "exactly in their favour", as the party was claiming. It won 70 posts of the Municipal (Nagar Palika) Parishad presidents as against Samajwadi Party's 45, BSP's 29 and Congress 9.

Cases of juveniles in conflict with the law have gone up again after a dip of 13.1% was registered in 2015 over 2014. During 2016, IPC crimes reported charge sheeting rate of 72.9% and conviction rate of 46.8% in the country.

The Samajwadi Party also attributed its humiliating defeat in the civic body polls to the "faulty EVMs used at some places". "I can guarantee if ballot papers are used, BJP won't come to power", she said.

Akhilesh Yadav on Saturday took to Twitter to show that the BJP has won only in areas where EVMs were used. This is clear from results of seats where ballot papers were used.

BJP's UP general secretary Vijay Pathak however launched a counter attack on the opposition saying instead of introspecting after the results, these parties were blaming EVMs for their poor performance. "And it was because of the EVMs that Mayawati came to power in 2007 in UP, while Akhilesh emerged victorious in 2012". The victory has also been rendered bitter by serious allegations of bungling in voter lists and manipulation of EVM's.

"The BJP had won three-fourth of the seats in the assembly polls".

Overall, in Gorakhpur, BJP won 27 wards, SP 18, BSP 2 and Congress 2.
