He breathed his last this evening on December 4 at the Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital in Mumbai.

He took on the name "Shashiraj" for his roles in commercial films back in the 40s, instead of using his own name because there was another Shashi Kapoor, a child artist, who was best known for his roles in mythological films.

Shashi Tharoor, the Congress MP, himself tweeted about the loss of the great actor, Shashi Kapoor.

He had been suffering from ailments for the past few years.

"Saddened by the passing away of veteran actor Shashi Kapoor".

For fun, we also included the top four teams in the world that did not qualify for the World Cup in a hypothetical Group X. That group would be tougher than any group that is in the World Cup.

In 2011, Shashi Kapoor was awarded the Padma Bhushan, India's third highest civilian honour, Times of India reported. He is survived by two sons Kunal and Karan, and a daughter Sanjana. "He had a kidney problem and was on dialysis for several years", his nephew Randhir Kapoor, the son of the late Raj Kapoor, told PTI.

Kapoor and wife Jennifer Kendal together led to the foundation of the iconic Prithvi Theatre in November 1978 which now lies in the heart of the Mumbai city.

He debuted as a leading man in Dharmputra in 1961, and his most memorable roles were in such films as Jab Jab Phool Khile (Whenever The Flowers Bloom, 1965), Kabhi Kabhie (Sometimes, 1976), and Kalyug (Age of Downfall, 1981). He was a part of a number of British and American films. He started acting in films as a child artiste in the late '40s.

His charming smile and pleasing demeanour made Shahsi Kapoor a popular Bollywood hero and he appeared in 116 Hindi films, including 61 films as the solo lead hero and 55 multi star-cast films, 21 films as supporting actor and special appearance in 7 films.

In Hindi cinema, Shashi Kapoor acted alongside many noted heroines such as Nanda. Yash Chopra's Waqt and some other films brought him in the big league, but his English films bring forth an entirely new side of his personality.
