Deja vu: Facebook might split Instagram messaging into a separate app

As it stands, only a few markets have this new app Direct rolled out while Instagram continues to experiment. And now, Instagram is doing something huge: Instagram is testing out a new app called Instagram Direct. Essentially, the new Instagram Direct app is a camera-centric messenger aimed at making the messaging experience richer. Thus, Facebook now has three individual messaging apps - WhatsApp, Messenger and Direct.

If Direct's installed on an iOS or Android device alongside Instagram, the latter's familiar messaging inbox disappears; It's superseded by Direct, which launches with a swipe right from anywhere in Instagram. Creators came up with it because they feel that it's hard to have a great private messaging experience in the same app that allows you to publicly broadcast messages.

In anticipation of this, the Facebook-owned app has been trialling Shopping on Instagram over the previous year in the U.S., and is planning on rolling out the feature to more countries in 2018. "We can push the boundaries to create the fastest and most creative space for private sharing when Direct is a camera-first, standalone app". Like Snapchat, it opens to the camera, in an effort to get you in the habit of regularly sharing. Direct opens to the camera, just like Snapchat, and lets you slap some fun filters on your face before firing off a photo to your friends. I would miss the lack of messaging facility in the main Instagram app but if it means there is even a small possibility that Stories goes away from it and we go back to the good old days of pre-Facebook Instagram then I'm completely fine with it. With a global release, a lot more filters would probably be added, and since Instagram has uses stickers and locations in stories, one would assume those would be included too. But as long as Direct is a part of Instagram, expanding the platform would get increasingly hard for the company. A swipe down in this pane will reveal a text field with a gradient background in case you just wanna type something up for someone. Whether that happens later or not remains to be seen but it makes sense for it to be within the messaging app.
