5 soldiers go missing at the LoC

The Army has begun rescue operations to try and locate the jawans.

Three army men of 36 Rashtriya Rifles, Lance Naik Pramanik, Rifleman Shiv Singh, and N Moorhty are missing in Gurez area as an avalanche hit a bunker in upper reaches of Bagtore that falls in Kanzalwan zone.

Three soldiers have gone missing after a snow avalanche hit forward Army post in north Kashmir, where two more soldiers went missing after slipping from a mountain during the last 24 hours.

The state police have launched a search operation has been launched.

Defence Ministry spokesperson Colonel Rajesh Kalia said that a snow avalanche, triggered by snowfall since Monday, hit Army's Mani Post at Bagtoo in Gurez.

Earlier in January, fourteen soldiers died in twin avalanches that hit an Army camp and a patrol party in Gurez sector.

Bandipora Deputy Commissioner Sajjad Hussain on Tuesday evening issued a weather advisory asking locals in Gurez and Tulail areas not to venture in avalanche prone areas till weather conditions become favourable. Gurez Valley received near about 5 feet of snow. The Srinagar-Jammu Highway and the Mughal Road were also closed for vehicular movement on Tuesday.

According to the Met department, there has been moderate to heavy snowfall in many areas of the Valley with Gulmarg receiving the highest so far.

Meanwhile, over 70 people, stranded after heavy rains and snowfall at Surankote, were rescued.
