If you're a health care worker and you haven't gotten a flu shot, you're required to wear a face mask when working with patients.

It is not too late to get vaccinated, and there are ample amounts of the vaccine available, Zucker said. Go to to find a location near you where you can get vaccinated.

Flu vaccines are offered by many doctor's offices, clinics, health departments, pharmacies and college health centers, as well as by many employers and some schools.

The Centers for Disease Control are showing sharp increases in the number of positive tests for the virus.

But that's still a lot better than coming down with a full-blown flu, which can knock people out for over a week.

A large, worldwide survey conducted by the CDC and several of its global health partners suggests that significantly more people than previously estimated die from influenza-related respiratory illnesses each year.

"The very young and the very old could potentially die from getting the flu", said Dr. Hetal Thakore, Medical Director, Doctors Hospital.

A 2014 study showed that flu vaccine reduced children's risk of flu-related pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) admission by 74 percent during flu seasons from 2010-2012.

Vaccination was associated with lower rates of some cardiac events among people with heart disease, especially among those who had a cardiac event in the past year.

"Vaccination is the best way to protect against influenza, and is especially important for health care workers", said Health Commissioner Dr. Howard Zucker in a news release. Despite widespread publicity touting the benefits of being vaccinated, ODH states that roughly three of every five people across the country have not been vaccinated yet this year - including two of every three pregnant women. "If they fail to receive influenza vaccination during pregnancy, postpartum vaccination would also be useful in protecting their infants from the threat of influenza", the authors wrote.

"Much of the influenza that they recognize now that is circulating is a fairly good match with the strains in the vaccine", she says.

Another study found that babies of women who got a flu vaccine during their pregnancy were about one-third less likely to get sick with flu than babies in unvaccinated women. Putting others at risk can be risky and you could also give the flu back to yourself if you're continuing to work.
