It appears that the this new version of Google Maps is only compatible with devices running Android Go - Google's new lightweight mobile operating system designed for budget devices in developing markets. In a blog post on Wednesday, Google announced that its eponymous personal assistant will hit tablets and Android devices running 5.0 Lollipop and newer "in the coming weeks".

The app description on Play Store states, "Google Maps Go, the lighter version of the original Google Maps app". That instantly opens up more than a quarter more of the Android user base for Google Assistant to tap into. The virtual personal assistant was announced by Google at its developer conference past year and made its debut with the Pixel and Pixel XL smartphones. Google Assistant has started rolling out to users with the language set to English in the U.S., UK, India, Australia, Canada, and Singapore, as well as to Spanish user in the U.S., Mexico, and Spain. Soon after, the company rolled out the digital assistant to every Android smartphone running Android 6.0 Marshmallow and above.

Android 5.0 Lollipop smartphones and tablets running version 6.0 Marshmallow and version 7.0 Nougat will get the update, meaning that half of all Android users will have access. However, the roll out will be limited to tablets running Android Marshmallow or later. Other regions where the update will also be made available include Brazil, Germany, Italy, South Korea and Japan.
