5-Magnitude Quake Strikes in Indonesia: USGS

The US Geological Survey said the quake of magnitude 6.5 was focused only 0.3 kilometre southwest of the Cipatujah area in West Java Province, very near to the land, a 91km under the seabed.

The one-minute quake could be strongly felt in the country's capital Jakarta more than 200 km from the epicentre.

The National Disaster Management and Mitigation Agency issued a tsunami alert, though no large waves were reported.

Some damages have been reported from some cities in the southern parts of the island, according to Sutopo.

The epicentre of the natural disaster was 11 km southwest of Tasikmalaya Regency, West Java province, 102 km from West Java's capital Bandung, with a depth of 107 km in the Earth.

Damage was heaviest in the Tasikmalaya, Pangandaran and Ciamis regions of West Java Province near the epicenter.

Indonesia's meteorology and geophysics agency said a magnitude 5.7 quake early on Saturday also struck south of West Java.

Indonesia's MetroTV said a general hospital in the central Java town of Banyumas was damaged and patients were evacuated.

The Bureau of Meterology said there was no tsunami threat to Australia.

Indonesia sits on the "Pacific Ring of Fire" and has frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
