Business owners getting ready for minimum wage increase

The minimum wage in Erie and other upstate counties - not including Westchester, Suffolk and Nassau Counties and New York City - increased to $10.40 per hour Sunday.

Minimum wage workers in 18 states will get a pay hike next week when higher wage floors go into effect around the country for 2018.

"I'm very concerned raising the cost of entry-level jobs will highlight the differences in cost between doing business in NY versus other states", Goodell said on Friday. She's "100 percent supportive" of a $15 minimum wage. This marks the second increase toward a statewide $15 minimum wage.

The new state minimum wage will rise to $8.30 an hour.

Marotto prefers a tiered wage, where workers earn more money based on how long they've been employed.

"We see the $12 an hour as being a pathway to economic justice", says Farris.

Wendy Block is a spokeswoman with the Michigan Chamber of Commerce. Moran says she already pays her workers a higher wage. And while states like OH and Kentucky have blocked wage increases, others like Colorado and Hawaii just instituted pay raises of nearly a dollar.

"The paid family leave requirements of New York State have taken money out of employee paychecks and have created scheduling challenges for employers in a time when finding employees is hard". There is no cost to employers.
