The National Medical Commission Bill was tabled in Parliament on Friday. The ministry has also sought a compliance report from hospitals.

"There has been a good response to our strike call from private hospitals where the OPDs will remain shut for 12 hours, though a few corporate hospitals in Bengaluru like Apollo, Fortis and Kempegowda Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) are functioning normally", Ravindra told the media here.

While doctors in government hospitals will continue their services, they will observe a "Black Day" by wearing a black arm band as their way of participating in the strike.

NMC Bill introduced the concept of "bridge courses" that allows Ayush doctors to practice allopathy that irked modern medicine doctors.

The association said the new bill makes provisions for only 40 per cent seats in a private medical college to be regulated as far as fee was concerned while for the rest, the private colleges are free to fix the rates.

"NMC is an anti-poor bill with pro-private management clauses. If passed, the bill allows for any private medical college to raise its undergraduate and post graduate seats on its own", said Shah. The Bill is also scheduled for consideration in Lok Sabha today.

The bill seeks to replace the Medical Council of India which is the apex body for the medical fraternity since 1934 and forming new National Medical Council. According to the Bill, the commission will have a panel of five elected and 12 ex-officio consisting of government-nominated chairman and members, while the board members will be selected by a search committee under the Cabinet Secretary.

Terming the Bill as "anti-people and anti-patient", the association in a statement has stated that the Bill purported to eradicate corruption is "designed to open the floodgates of corruption". The strike will go until 6 pm today.
