Popular media streaming app Kodi comes to Xbox One

The Kodi for Xbox One Alpha definitely has some significant issues that limit its current functionality to something a bit less useful than Kodi on Windows or Android. At the same time, it also cautions users to keep in mind that this is just the initial release, which still has some very rough edges. It's not going to be as stable as the regular version and has missing features.

The app will have no access to the Blu-ray drive or an attached storage drive.

"As of this writing there's limited access to only what's part of your Video and Music folders", Kodi said. The limitations are mostly due to the shortcomings of UWP, as some APIs are presumably missing from the platform, especially for the Xbox One where apps don't necessarily have the same access to the core OS features like they would on the desktop. Since then, XBMC has gotten a name change and is now called Kodi and has branched out to nearly any device you can think of-except Xbox One. As is the goal with UWP apps, Kodi looks the same on Windows 10 as it does on the Xbox One which means a better experience for users who use it across multiple platforms. Some parts are not even finished yet and our developers are still working on getting it up to the regular standard. "We cannot promise to what extend we can get every feature working as it all depends on what is available to us developers", it claims. In 2010, they stopped development on the Xbox version, as technical hurdles made it harder to develop for Xbox 360, and by 2014, renamed XBMC to Kodi.

Kodi: What it is and how does it work?

Below you can find a more detailed write-up about this from the developers. The roots of Kodi are directly connected to the Xbox, as the first iterations of the project were called the "Xbox Media Player". With help from Microsoft, the infant UWP version was born in July. It can be downloaded for free at the Microsoft Store.

European Xbox One owners are first to receive the app, which can be installed on consoles via the Microsoft Store.
