Alexa will soon be able to control ovens and microwaves

As such the company is already offering its Echo lineup in different form factors. Amazon now has a large space on the show floor dedicated to Alexa; it also has a separate area across from space reserved for Google and its Google Assistant, a competitor to Alexa.

As users would use other Alexa devices, the Hisense Smart TVs will enable the user to perform various actions using only their voice. Yes, you heard that right. Amazon Alexa's multiple smart home integrations and Google teaming with Nest and Apple HomeKit also are expected to fuel sales of smart speakers.

"Customers have now connected tens of millions of smart home devices to Alexa, including cameras, door locks, lights, entertainment systems, and thermostats".

That's June Oven, the touchscreen-fronted smart appliance that was announced back in 2015. That will allow for commands like "Alexa, microwave for two minutes on high", "Alexa, cook a frozen pizza", or "Alexa, defrost a pound of steak", and have the settings and times adjusted automatically. Voice is the new app in controlling devices, particularly in our smart homes. Users can leverage these interfaces today for microwaves and for appliances that support preset cooking. Whilst Amazon has a variety of vendor partners, it's not certain how rapidly support will roll out. The skill enables customers to easily configure, start, and operate their connected Whirlpool microwaves.

If Amazon does launch paid ads on Alexa, and follows through on other digital advertising projects such as videos, it could finally dominate in the one area where it has often lagged far behind other tech companies. GE, Kenmore, LG and Samsung will also sell new products with Alexa.

These models might come to Australia later this year, once Alexa and Amazon's Echo smart speakers are officially supported locally.

All in all, this is an interesting development in the technology sphere. The tools are available from Amazon for developers now, but we'll still have to wait a while to see compatible appliances.
