Bus strike hits 50 lakh commuters

Reading out a statement before reporters, he said the government had proposed a "very good" wage revision agreement despite financial issues faced by the transport corporations. "If they fail to do so, as per the law, departmental action will be initiated against them". He said that buses will be operated with the help of the workers in the Anna Thozhirsanga Peravai, a trade union affiliated to the AIADMK.

Private bus operators were also finding it hard as they were not aware of the routes and where to stop.

Following the strike, commuters alleged over-charging by autos and private buses even as many opted for suburban rail services in Chennai.

Leader of opposition MK Stalin and actor-turned-politician Kamal Haasan have also appealed to Chief Minister EPS to hold talks with transport workers to end the stalemate.

Ten unions had announced launching the strike on Thursday after collapse of talks on wage revision. The State government offered a 2.41-2.44 times rise, which was rejected by union representatives.
