Fire Erupts as Airliners Collide at Toronto's Pearson Airport

Investigators are reportedly gathering information about the incident, including "how many ground crew were present, how many are required [and] what the procedures are for this type of maneuver", a Transportation Safety Board of Canada spokesperson told CBC.

The WestJet was stationary while it waited for a gate after flying in from Cancun, Mexico with 168 passengers and a crew of six on board when it was struck by a Sunwing aircraft moving back from a gate. There were no passengers on the China Southern plane, Marsico said. "We looked out the window and saw that the plane had backed up into us".

A collision between two jets caused a scary situation at Toronto's Pearson Airport on Friday. After a couple of seconds the entire thing ignited and it was chaos inside the plane.

Passengers on the Westjet Boeing 737-800 were forced to evacuate via emergency slides in the frigid cold.

But he said the crew's primary piece of advice was at odds with what he felt to be the safest approach.

Alagheband said he never heard announcements coming from the pilot clarifying how to proceed, a situation he said was unsafe given the fact that a fire was burning near an area where plane fuel is stored.

Toronto's Pearson Airport said on Twitter that some flight operations had been impacted by the incident and an investigation was underway.

None of the passengers were injured but the airport said in a statement that one of its firefighters was being treated in hospital.

"I'm sure they did their best, but. they kept saying "be seated, remain seated" as the fire was going on outside", he said.

Sunwing said its plane was being towed by its ground handling service provider at the time and there were no passengers or crew on board.
