Pierce County deputy fatally shot after responding to home invasion; manhunt underway

He was a U.S. Navy Veteran, and was married with three children, according to a Facebook post from the Pierce County Sheriff's Department.

"Heartbroken to report Deputy Daniel McCartney, #484, lost his life overnight while courageously protecting citizens of Pierce Co.", Pierce County Sheriff's Office tweeted.

The deputy arrived on scene and became involved in a foot pursuit with a male suspect, during which shots were fired and the deputy was struck. The deputy had been transported to a hospital in Tacoma before he died.

Authorities launched a dragnet after a Washington state sheriff's deputy was shot and killed while chasing a pair of suspected burglars late Sunday, police said.

The incident occurred at about 11:00 hours, local time, and the police immediately closed the station. A 45-year-old woman was also hospitalized, but her condition is unknown.

One suspected burglar was found dead near the home about 1:30 a.m.

A police spokesman said the police authorities believed there was a gunbattle between McCartney and the home intruders during the fatal encounter.

A manhunt for the second suspect is underway. One suspect was found dead at the scene and another is on the loose and being sought by authorities. That road and others - 176th Street East, 38th Avenue East and Canyon Road East - were closed to form a perimeter for the search. The second suspected burglar police are hunting was described as tall and thin with curly dark hair in a ponytail and "pock marks" on the right side of his face. He was last seen wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt and a black beanie. Trudi and I are saddened and praying for the deputy's young family as they grieve the loss of their husband and father.

Bethel School District canceled all classes for Monday out of "an abundance of caution", it reported on its Facebook page. The Pierce County Skills Center will also be closed. Donations can be made any any TAPCO Credit Union branch or via Paypal.
