Lenovo and Google Launch the World's First Standalone Daydream VR Headset

Previous Google Daydream headsets required the use of a compatible phone installed in them. Lenovo today also launched the Lenovo Mirage Camera with Daydream technology for capturing VR video in 180 degrees, which you can then watch on the Mirage Solo (and on Cardboard and Daydream devices). However, the good news is that partners like Lenovo are stepping in to fill that gap.

It'll be available from Q2 this year for an RRP of $449.99 (around £332 at today's exchange rate, but we're waiting for official United Kingdom pricing).

All we know is that it will be "affordable", apparently. WorldSense lets user move around and explore their virtual environments.

"It's based on years of investment in simultaneous localization and mapping, and it enables PC-quality positional tracking on a mobile device without the need for any additional external sensors", Google's Clay Bavor explained.

Lenovo and Google Launch the World's First Standalone Daydream VR Headset

In fact, it's the very first standalone VR headset to use the platform, and it uses a new chipset from Intel: the Snapdragon 835 VR Platform. The display is a 5.5-inch 75Hz 1440p LCD with a 110-degree field of view, and the device contains a 4,000mAh battery. The headset has also been engineered for better load distribution to reduce strain on the wearer. There's also some breathable padding in areas where the headset touches the skin, though it remains to be seen how fast that will become a grime depository. "This gives you an ergonomic headset that looks and feels like something you want to wear". You can also change its functionality from app to app.

The headset comes with its own wireless Daydream controller, acting as a "unique and intuitive extension of your hand", and the combo should cost no more than $400 when it finally goes on sale. The Mirage Solo uses the same Daydream controller as the official model to control the virtual world around you. Lenovo promises that a suite of apps will be coming soon to expand the platform, though that will happen closer to the device's release in the second quarter.

"Athens by exploring the ancient Greek citadel in person or search for clues to unravel a mystery surrounding fugitive Replicants in the congested streets of Blade Runner". Which again, makes it lighter weight and since it is already pretty thin, it can slide right into your pocket without looking awkward - unlike most 360-degree cameras on the market right now. You just mount this thing on your head, with "size accommodations for almost every face shape, visual aid and head proportion", and get transported into a whole new world of gaming and other hypnotic experiences.
