RAMALLAH, Palestinian Territories - The Palestinian government attacked comments Wednesday by the USA ambassador to Israel blaming it for the failure of peace efforts, after an Israeli settler was killed in the occupied West Bank. Some 50 families now live in Havat Gilad.

The attack took place near the Palestinian village of Surra, which was raided shortly after the incident.

Last month, the European Union urged the Israeli regime to stop plans for the construction of new settler units in the occupied West Bank, warning that such moves undermine peace efforts.

Hundreds attended Shevah's funeral at Havat Gilad.

It was unclear whether the gun attack on the Israeli or Thursday's shooting death of the Palestinian near Nablus were related to Trump's declaration.

Palestinians and rights groups have criticized Israel for using excessive force against Palestinian protesters.

In the West Bank, the Health Ministry said Ali Omar, 16, was shot in the head with live fire in clashes near the city of Nablus.

US involvement with resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is off the table until President Donald Trump revokes his decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, a top Palestinian negotiator said Tuesday. One Israeli has been killed in a Palestinian attack.

The Israeli army announced that its forces were carrying out a large search operation in the vicinity of Nablus to determine the location of the attackers, who shot at the settler, 35-year-old Raziel Shevach, as he was driving along Route 60 near the "illegal" settlement of Havat Gilad, where he resides.

Meanwhile, Israeli Deputy Foreign Minister, Tzipi Hotovely, responded to Ambassador Friedman's tweet, thanking the United States for standing with Israel and for trying to bring an end to the Palestinian Authority's sponsorship of terrorism.

"In the aftermath of the decision to advance over 1,000 housing units in the occupied West Bank, I reiterate that Israeli settlement construction is illegal under global law and is one of the major obstacles to peace", said Mladenov in a statement.

For Palestinians, such payments are a key source of income for families who have in many cases lost their main breadwinner.

The Palestinians want these areas - along with the Gaza Strip - for the establishment of a future Palestinian state. Overall, the PA's payments to terrorists and their families now total about $300 million annually. If the terrorist is sentenced to 20 years or more, meaning he has probably killed Israelis, his lifetime monthly allowance is five times that.
