Coutinho signed a five-year contract to end a long-running transfer saga on Monday with Mestre revealing that Liverpool had originally asked for €200 million euros.

Barcelona agreed a 142 million-pound ($192 million) deal with Liverpool on Saturday to buy Coutinho, who became their record signing.

"The club has always been interested in signing Coutinho, the difference to last summer is that there was a big cut in price", Mestre told reporters on Monday at Coutinho's official presentation.

Barcelona director Albert Soler said in September the club abandoned their pursuit of the Brazilian playmaker a year ago because Liverpool were asking for €200 million.

He has a minor thigh injury and missed the club's past two games, including Friday's FA Cup third-round win against Everton.

He added: "We knew it was not going to be easy to get him here".

"We can be satisfied that one of the world's star players has landed in Barcelona".

Barcelona began the hunt for Coutinho, who spent five years on Merseyside, after his countryman, Neymar, moved to PSG last season.

Suarez, who played alongside Coutinho at Anfield until he joined Barca in 2014, is looking forward to great success with the playmaker after being reunited.

However, Coutinho's desire to move to the Camp Nou eventually paved the way for negotiations to open between the two clubs, with Liverpool's owners Fenway Sports Group reluctantly giving up on keeping the Brazilian.

Coutinho had earlier met Gerard Pique and Paulinho on his first full day at the club.
