Apple to release software update to resolve iPhone slowdown

"We will tell somebody we're slightly reducing your performance by some amount in order to not have an unexpected restart and if you don't want it, you can turn it off".

Before Apple released iOS 10.2.1 in 2016, older iPhones were frequently hit with an issue that caused a spontaneous shutdown if the battery's voltage output dropped below a certain threshold - which occurred more frequently when the battery got old, cold, or ran low on charge.

Apple chief executive Tim Cook said Wednesday you'll soon be able to make the decision between your iPhone's performance and its battery life, after controversy over the company's decision to do it for you.

Cook says the update will also give notifications to users before it starts throttling phone performance due to weak battery health.

The issue struck a nerve on social media, where many voiced a theory that Apple intentionally slows down older phones to encourage customers to buy new ones. "This hasn't been done before", Cook told US ABC News.

As Intel admitted last week , some folks on Haswell and Broadwell CPUs are seeing spontaneous system restarts because of the updates.

Cook said the iOS update will be rolled out to developers next month.

Cook was responding to questions about the recent finding that Apple slows down the performance of iPhones whose batteries have degraded to that level.

The rest of the interview focused on Apple's repatriation of foreign revenue, which Cook claims will bring $US38 ($48) billion back to the U.S. and is part of the company's plans to spend $US350 ($439) billion in the United States over the next five years. For those with long message threads spanning months/years, this would be kind of a pity to delete them all, but like we said this is the only fix at the moment.

Cook is right, This sort of thing is never done before by any Mobile phone manufacturer, no one provides the user to know about the health of the battery.

In December, Apple released an open letter explaining the updates, and promised a number of changes, including the upcoming software update and a reduction in price of the company's battery exchange program for users with affected models.
