Kasganj violence: Prime accused of 'Tiranga Rally' firing, killing arrested

In a major breakthrough in the Kasganj violence case, the Uttar Pradesh Police on Wednesday arrested the prime accused in the murder of Chandan Gupta who was killed in clashes between two communities which broke out on the Republic Day. Visuals of 22-year-old Chandan Gupta participating in the "Tiranga Yatra" is also among the clips that have emerged from the town that remains on edge.

As many as 112 people were arrested and security forces personnel intensified vigil in the strife-torn Kasganj in western UP. Union Minister Giriraj Singh said that he felt the violence was pre-planned.

Authorities also stopped a Congress delegation in Mirhachi area in Etah near the Kasganj border. Tension continues in some pockets of Kasganj though no fresh incident of violence has been reported in the past 24 hours.

The video that surfaced on social media shows the visuals right before the communal clash escalated, as a group of men are seen on a road with guns, clubs, and sticks.

"After the stone pelting, a shot was sacked from somewhere which hit Chandan Gupta", the report accessed by The Hindu said. The UP Government has also been asked to provide details of the steps taken to punish the culprits, an official said.

Defying the Uttar Pradesh police order against carrying out a rally, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) on Wednesday carried out a Tiranga (Tricolour) rally across Agra, waving saffron flags and chanting anti-Pakistan slogans.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, in an oblique reference to the Kasganj violence, on Tuesday said that lumpen elements and lawlessness will not be tolerated in the state.

Unidentified miscreants had pelted the motorcycle rally with stones.

He said the killers of the youth should be tried for treason and strict punishment given to them.

The UP Police said drone cameras had been deployed for aerial surveillance and described the situation as improving. A Peace Committee formed by the district administration has been doing the rounds of the troubled areas requesting people not to pay heed to rumours.
