Lallana was playing with Liverpool's U23s as he attempts to regain fitness while coming back from a long term thigh injury that has kept him out most of the season.

Lallana, after losing out on a one-on-one aerial duel with 19-year-old defensive midfielder George Marsh, attacked Marsh by grabbing his neck from behind and shoving the top of his head down.

The midfielder started against Tottenham's Under 23s on Monday but was dismissed after reacting angrily to a challenge from George Marsh.

The England worldwide was dragged away by team-mate Danny Ings before being dismissed.

It was pretty ridiculous from such an experienced player and, rather unsurprisingly, the ref showed him a straight red card.

Asked about his decision to start the French global on the bench, Mourinho said, "I changed a few players". Defeat left United second in the table but a huge 15 points behind runaway leaders Manchester City .

"I've never seen Adam react like that", said Liverpool's U23s manager Neil Critchley, according to BBC Sport.

Naturally, he was red carded for his actions because seriously, who the hell does that in a U23 match?!

However, rather than accelerate his return to the first-team, Lallana's hot-headed appearance against Tottenham in the Premier League 2 could see him on the end of a three-match ban. Klopp had spoken about Lallana's absence from the first team last week.

Liverpool finished the match with just 9 players after rookie George Johnston was also sent off for two bookable offences.
